Soufrière Hills

Soufrière Hills

The Soufrière Hills are an active stratovolcano with many lava domes on the Caribbean island of Montserrat. In 1995 the volcano became active after a long period of being dormancy. It erupted and remained active until 2010. In 2013 it erupted once again.

The 1995 eruption rendered half of Montserrat uninhabitable and lahars totally destroyed the capital of Plymouth. Before the eruption, Chances Peak was the highest summit in the Soufrière Hills, but subsequent eruptions have caused other peaks to rise higher.

The volcano is also known as Galway's Soufrière.
