Swayambhu Mahachaitya (स्वयम्भू स्तूप)

The Buddhist temple complex of Swayambhu Mahachaitya is also known as Swayambhunath. It is revered by both Buddhists and Hindus. It sits atop a hill, west of Kathmandu and it is one of the best known sights in the region. It is also one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites.

The site's major landmark is its central stupa, which is topped by an aureate block that include the watchful eyes of Buddha. Pilgrims who visit the site, circumambulate the stupa and spin a series of prayer wheels that are situated at the base of the building. On the hill, where the stupa is located, a large tribe of garrulous monkeys lives and it's because of them that the temple is often referred to as 'Monkey Temple'.

There are several other shrines and temples in the complex, as well as a Tibetan monastery, a museum and a library.

There are 2 access point to Swayambhu Mahachaitya. One is a long staircase that leads straight to the platform on which the temples reside. A car road runs around the hill and reaches the complex from the southwest.

There are shops, restaurants and hostels on the site.
