Taiping is a quiet place that boasts the beautiful Lake Garden, established in 1880. There used to be a Tulip Garden as well, but it has been closed. Taiping has many old Anglo-Malay buildings, a bustling night market and there are only few tourists, so it retains its original Malaysian culture.
Perak State Museum is the oldest museum in Malaysia. It was opened in 1886. In the same year the All Saints' Church was founded. Taiping also boasts a beautiful old clock tower. Malaysia's oldest zoo is also in Taiping.
Maxwell Hill, or Bukit Larut is a hill station that is perfect for jungle-trekking and camping.
Taiping is said to be the wettest location in Malaysia, with an average annual rainfall of some 4,000 mm.
There are several hotels and restaurants in town. Taiping is 220 km northwest of Kuala Lumpur.
