Taxila

Taxila is often referred to as Takshashila. It used to be the capital of ancient Gāndhāra and was founded around 1000 BC. The archaeological repository at Taxila is worth a visit. The best way to do so is on a day trip from Islamabad or Rawalpindi. Taxila is 20 km northwest of Islamabad. It was included in the UNESCO list of world heritage sites in 1980.
