Terneuzen
Terneuzen is a city in the Dutch province of Zeeland, in southwest of the country. During the 12th cnetury, the city was known as 'Ter Nose' and the oldest documents that mention the city, date from 1325. Terneuzen received city rights in 1584. In 1953, dykes around the city were breached during a storm surge and the city was flooded.
There are several places of interest in Terneuzen, including:
- Oud-Terneuzen is the city's old town. It consists of a collection of old streets and houses in the city center and it is situated on the old 16th-century fortifications.
- The Moffenschans is a 16th-century farmhouse, built on the site of the fortress. It was built German mercenaries in 1583 under the guidence of Philip of Hohenlohe-Neuenstein to resist an attack by Spanish troops.
- The old Town Hall is located on Noordstraat. It is a characteristic building with a tower. After obtaining city rights, the building was renovated using building materials from the ruins of the castle of the craft lord of Zaamslag. In 1647 another renovation took place, during which the cellar was furnished as a 'crymeneel ghevangenhuys' (prison). In 1807, during the French occupation, the tower was lowered to make way for a semaphore for naval communications on the Antwerp-Vlissingen line. In 1859 the tower was modified to its current appearance.
- The Scheldeboulevard runs along the Westerschelde rver and it is a good place to watch large ships that pass very close to the shore on their way to the Belgian harbour of Antwerp. The boulevard is part of a walking route that is lines with numerous statues made by local artists.
- The Arsenaal, or Arsenaalskazerne Terneuzen, is a military building that was erected in 1848. It was part of the defensive structures that protected the city. Nowadays the buildings are home to cafés and bars.
- The De vliegende Hollander (The Flying Dutchman) consists of a ship that is anchored in a former canal arm, not far from the Herengracht. According to legend, the ship's captain, Willem van der Decken, rebelled against God, was born in Terneuzen.
- The Willibrordus Tower is all that remains of a neo-Gothic Catholic church that was consecrated in 1915 and demolished in 1968. The former parsonage and monastery chapel are still intact and the shape where the church's nave once stood, is indicated by rows of trees.
Terneuzen is 130 km southwest of Amsterdam, but due to the geography the distance by road is much larger. As most cities in the Netherlands, Terneuzen has excellent road and rail connections with the rest of the country. Accommodation and restaurants are widely available in the city.
