Teyateyaneng is often referred to as Ty, or T.Y., because the full name means 'Place of Quicksand' which isn't very inviting. The town got its name from the Tebe-tebe River and the Teja-tejana River, which run along the north and south of town respectively. They both carry vast quantities of sand, hence the 'place of quick sands' after which Teyateyaneng was named.
The town is Lesotho's arts and crafts center and has a large number of tapestries, tribal wool and Letlotlo handcrafts manufacturers.
Not far from town are several rock caves with cave paintings of the Khoi San tribes that originally lived in the area. The Kome Cave Dwellings were built and protected by Chief Teleka of the Basia Clan during the early 19th century. The surrounding area also boasts numerous hiking trails.
Teyateyaneng is 32 km (19 miles) northeast of Maseru and you can get there by minibus taxi. There are tourism facilities such as hotels, lodges and cafes in Teyateyaneng, but most people opt to stay in the capital.
