The Everest Region
From the Tibetan side, 8,848.86 m (29,032 ft) high Mount Everest (or Qoomolangma) looks much more scenic then from the Nepal side. The Qoomolangma Nature Preserve covers 27,000 km² around Everest's Tibetan face. The reserve was established in an effort to protect the environment and the cultural traditions of the local people.
One of the most popular destinations in Tibet is the Everest Base Camp, which is used as a Chinese starting point for expeditions to the summit. There are two access points, at Shegar and Tingri, both on the Friendship Highway to Nepal.
If you want to visit the Base Camp you should prepare yourself very well. It is a strenuous climb and you should spend a while in the region to get acclimatized to the high altitude. Wear good shoes and take warm clothing. It is also possible to reach the Base Camp by 4WD vehicle from Shegar.
