The Bottom

The first settlers arrived in Saba around 1640. Their first settlement was destroyed by a landslide and they subsequently established De Botte, which means the bowl and referred to the town's geographic location. The town's name later changed to The Bottom.

Nowadays, The Bottom is the small, laid back administrative center of Saba. It is the first town you will see, if you arrive on Saba by boat. About a third of Saba's population lives there.

Points of interest

The Department of Public-Works is housed in an old school building. There are numerous nice-smelling night-blooming cacti right next to it.
A little further down the road is the 18th century, stone Anglican Church.
Another church is the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. It was completed in 1935.
The third church in The Bottom is the Wesleyan Holiness Church.

Hiking trails

There are countless hiking trail on Saba, many of which originate in The Bottom. Some of them include the following:

The Bottom Mountain Trail runs between the Queen's Hotel and the junction at Rendezvous on the Mt. Scenery trail. This trail offers gooed views over The Bottom.
The Buds Mountain Loop goes all the way up to , which is 887 m (2,910 ft) high, making it Saba's highest mountain. It connects to the Bottom Mountain Trail and the hike takes about 1.5 hours one-way.
The Crispeen Trail connects The Bottom with the Mt. Scenery trail. It takes about 1.5 hours to walk it one way. The trail offers birdeye views of The Bottom.
The Parish Hill Trail runs between The Bottom and the top of the volcanic Parish Hill. From The Bottom to the top will take you about 1.5 hours.
The Sandy Cruz Trail starts not far from the Queen's Hotel and it runs all the way to Zion's Hill, 2.5 hours away. It offers nice views of Saba's northern coast and of Diamond Rock.
The Tara Ground Trail starts at the Bottom Mountain Trail and it runs to the Crispeen Trail. Along the trail you'll see some ruins of old farm buildings. It takes about 45 minutes one-way.
The Ladder consists of 800 steps that lead to the sea. The stairs were originally used to haul cargo the beach, where boats arrived, up to The Bottom. It takes about an hour to walk the steps and come back. The trailhead sits between the hospital and Wells Bay.

There are several hotels, restaurants and shops in The Bottom. The town is located in the southwest of Saba.
