Tirukkalikundram is a pilgrimage center at the base of a hill. It is also known as 'Tirukazhukundram'. The temple complex there is called Vedagiriswarar temple. It boasts a huge gopuram (pyramidal gateway). You can climb the 500 steps to the top of the hill and enjoy the scenery. A legend tells that two eagles on their way from Varanasi to Rameswaram come to the hilltop to be fed by a priest every day, but even if you wait all day they never turn up.
