Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary


The island of Tiwai is in the Moa River, 235 km southeast of Freetown and 50 km southwest of Kenema. It measures 12 km² and there are 11 different species of monkeys on the island, as well as 800 species of butterflies, 140 species of trees and more than 100 different kind of birds. The sanctuary was set up by the Peace Korps.

There is a camp ground on the island. You can get there by canoe from the town of Kambama, 5 km south of the sanctuary. Buses run as far as the town of Potori, 10 km to the west.
