There are five towns named 'Touba' in Senegal, but the one north of Mbaké is the most important pilgrimage town for Mouride Muslims in the country, as the tomb of their founder, Shaikh Ahmadou Bàmba Mbàcke is there.
Next to his tomb is the Grande Mosquée and it has 5 minarets, the tallest one is called Lamp Fall and it is 87 m (285 ft) high. The top of the minaret offers spectacular views over the surrounding area. The mosque was completed in 1963, but it has been enlarged several times since then and it dominates Touba. The current caliph resides in a large compound on the main square facing the Mosque.
Other sites in Touba include a library, the Caliph's official audience hall, a sacred 'Well of Mercy' and a cemetery.
Accommodation is available in town, though most people visit it on a day trip and reside in Dakar or Diourbel. Touba is 170 km east of Dakar.
