The eastern coast of Trinidad is wild, isolated and largely unpopulated. There are numerous mangrove swamps, coconut plantations and lonely beaches. You can wander along the entire coast without seeing much more than a few free-roaming cows, water buffaloes, vultures, egrets and herons. Inland is the protected Nariva Swamp, which is home to several endangered species, including the manatee (sea cows).
The main beaches on Trinidad's eastern coast are Mayaro Beach and Manzanilla Beach, which is a barrier beach that is also known as Cocal Beach. To the northeast, the coastline features higher cliffs and smaller beaches.
