Ubud
Ubud is Bali's cultural center. The city has grown rapidly and in the process it has engulfed several surrounding villages. Most of the villages have retained their distinct identities though and the result is a unique city with distinctive neighborhoods.
The Puri Lukisan Museum in Ubud has nice exhibitions of Balinese Art. It is surrounded by a beautiful garden. Art of Western artists who have worked in Bali can be seen at the Museum Neka, while the Agung Rai Gallery is a good place to go if you want to buy interesting art. The homes of influential Western artists Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet, whose influence on Balinese art has been significant, can be visited.
Just south of the town center is the dense Monkey Forest. You will have to walk through an area of beautiful rice paddies.
There are many hotels in Ubud, while the city's restaurants are among the finest on Bali. Ubud is also a good place to go if you want to see Balinese dancing or hear Balinese music. Ubud is situated in the hills, some 16 km north of Denpasar and 250 km east of Jakarta.
The rock carvings of Yeh Pulu, the Pura Samuan Tiga temple and Goa Gajah, which is also known as the elephant cave, are all not too far east of Ubud. The best way to get to them is by bemo from Ubud. You can also rent a mountain bike and pedal your way there.
