Ujiji

Ujiji

Ujiji is one of Tanzania's oldest market towns. Originally, it used to be a Swahili settlement and later an Arab slave trading post. It is on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, some 10 km south of Kigoma, but much more interesting than that city.

There is a Livingstone memorial, right off the main road, when coming from Kigoma. It is said Dr. Livingstone met with journalist Henry Stanley in Ujiji.

Some 500 meters down the same road is the beach, where local boat builders have their businesses. The wooden dhows are built without the help of modern machinery and construction methods seem to have been unchanged for many generations.

There is a scenic mosque in Ujiji.

There are several hotels and restaurants in town. Ujiji is 1090 km northwest of Dar es Salaam.
