Villajoyosa (La Vila Joiosa)

Villajoyosa coat of arms
Villajoyosa, or La Vila Joiosa, is a small coastal town on the Mediterranean, about 30 km north of Alicante in the Comunidad Valenciana. Its name translates as 'the joyful town'. Most locals refer to it as La Vila.

Most people visit Villajoyosa for its so-called hanging houses, colorful buildings, so close to the edge of the La Vila River that they seem to be 'hanging' over it.

Another interesting sight is the Gothic Catholic church of the Assumption. Villajoyosa boasts 3 km (2 mi) of nice beaches and the town is also known for its chocolate industry. The Royal Palm Casino is now closed.

Many people visit Villajoyosa for its festival of Moros i Cristians that re-enacts a boat landing from Berber pirates that was repelled by the town's population.

There are numerous hotels, cafés and restaurants in town. Villajoyosa is 375 km southeast of Madrid.
