Vladikavkaz (Владикавказ)


Vladikavkaz was founded in 1784 and used to be known as Ordzhonikidze (Орджоники́дзе) and Dzaudzhikau (Дзауджикау) during Soviet times.

It is the capital and largest city of the Autonomous Republic of North Ossetia in southern Russia. Vladikavkaz is located along the Terek River, not far from the northern slopes of the rugged Caucasus Mountains.

The city was designed as the key fortress to hold the two main routes across the Caucasus Mountains, the Georgian Military Highway through the Terek River Valley and the Ossetian Military Highway along the Audon Valley. It is an industrial and transportation center.

There are several hotels and restaurants in the city. Vladikavkaz is some 1,430 km south of Moscow.
