Watarrka National Park

Watarrka National Park

The Watarrka National Park was established in 1989 and is home to the spectacular Kings Canyon (Watarrka), a narrow gorge with cliffs soaring up to 300 m. The park offers a wide variety of environments in a relatively compact area. There are permanent springs, surrounded by fragile ferns and red sand hills, covered by desert oaks and spinifex.

An area of lush palm trees is known as the Garden of Eden. Not far from there is the Lost City, a maze of weathered domes that look uncannily like buildings.

The Watarrka National Park got its name from the Aboriginal word 'Watarrka', which is the name for the local umbrella bush (Acacia ligulata) that grows in the area. The park is in Australia's Northern Territory, 1,330 km south of Darwin and 2,100 km northwest of Canberra.
