Wau (Waw, واو)
Wau was founded by the French in the 1890's. It is also known as Waw, or Wow. The city is in the northwest of South Sudan and the capital of Western Bahr El Ghazal province. The area around Wau is mostly inhabited by people from the Dinka tribe and has been a longtime center of famine and war.
There is little accommodation in town. Wau is 650 km (400 mi) northwest of Juba, on the Jur River, not far from the border with the Central African Republic.
