At the beginning of the 19th century, the Whim Estate on the island of Saint Croix was one of the largest sugar producers. Nowadays, the neo-classical great house and its outbuildings have been converted into a museum, where you can see how the plantation owners and the slaves lived and worked on the property.
The main house has unusual curved walls and is ringed by a waterless ventilation moat. On the grounds of the estate, classical musical concerts are held periodically. The Whim Estate is not far southeast of Frederiksted.
Not far east of the Whim Estate is the Saint George Village Botanical Garden, where you can see more than 1,500 species of plants, as well as old plantation buildings, workshops and a wedding bower.
