Wuzhen (乌镇)
Wuzhen is a beautiful historic waterway city in the north of
Zhejiang Province. It is divided into 6 districts, each of which features different reenactments of traditional practices and cultures.
- The traditional workshops district.
- The traditional local-styled dwelling houses district.
- The traditional culture district.
- The traditional food and beverage district.
- The traditional shops and stores district.
- The traditional water township customs and life district.
You can follow an east-west-east circuit through the districts to experience the different reenactments of traditional crafts such as the printing and dyeing of blue printed fabrics, the primitive techniques of cloth shoe making and tobacco-planing.
Visitors are also allowed to operate the machines to experience how the original work was carried out in the 19th century. Most of the houses are decorated with carved wooden and stone doors and windows.
Other places of interest in Wuzhen include:
- The Former residence of Mao Dun had been the Mao family home for many generations. It was originally built in the mid 19th century and extended in 1984. Nowadays it's a museum and it is divided into 3 sections: 'Wuzhen, the Hometown of Mao Dun', 'the Way of Mao Dun' and 'the Former Residence of Mao Dun'.
- The Former residence of Mu Xin is located on 186 Caishenwan, Dongzha. In 1950, Muxin's mother was forced to donate the house to the local government, after which is was used as a standard and metric Fastener factory. The local government renovated and returned it to Muxin in 1999, after which he lived there until his death in 2011.
- The Mu Xin Art Museum opened for tourists in 2015. It is located in Xizha, Wuzhen.
- The teahouse of Fanglu Pavilion (Pavilion of Visits to Lu). According to legend, during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the Patron Saint of Tea named Lu Yu accidently ate some poisonous tea leaves and was subsequently rescued by Lu Tong, the owner of the house, who happened to collect tea leaves in the same area.
As a gratitude Lu Yu taught Lu Tong the secrets of tea-making skills, which resulted in the prosperity of Lu Tong's teahouse. At the suggestion of one guest, Lu Tong changed his teahouse's name to 'Pavilion of Visits to Lu' to commemorate Lu Yu.
The teahouse is south of Ying Bridge and offers great views of Guanqian Street. At the back is a terrace that sits on the city river. - The Bridge within a bridge is an optical illusion formed by the ancient Tongji and Renji bridges that sit at a 90° angle of each other. Either bridge can be seen through the arch of the other one, hence the name.
- The Art Wuzhen or Wuzhen Contemporary Art Exhibition aims to link global contemporary art with Wuzhen’s distinctive cultural landscape. The exhibition takes places across multiple indoor and outdoor locations in Wuzhen, including The North Silk Factory, the Rice Barn and the West Scenic Zone.
During the exhibition, both local and international artists perform.
