York (England)
York was founded by the Romans, as Eboracum in the year 71. It has been the capital of northern England for almost 2,000 years. It was an important place under the Romans, Saxons and Vikings and it boasts a magnificent Gothic cathedral, medieval city walls and old streets.
- The center of York is enclosed by medieval walls, which are the most complete in England. The walls retain all their original gateways. The walls have a length of 4 km (2.5 mi) and the entire circuit can be walked. On the northeast of York is a section without walls, as the King's Fishpond acted as a defence for the city there.
- York Minster is the largest cathedral in Europe and dominates the city.
- The Snickelways are narrow pedestrian routes that connected places, such as the former market-places in Pavement and St. Sampson's Square.
- The Shambles is a narrow medieval street, lined with shops, boutiques and tea rooms, many of which were originally butcher shops. Some of the hooks where carcasses were hung can still be seen. The Shrine of Margaret Clitherow is also located there.
- Goodramgate features numerous medieval houses, including the early-14th‑century Lady Row. The Holy Trinity church and its churchyard can be found adjacent to Lady Row.
- The Theatre Royal was established in 1744.
- The Grand Opera House offers a wide variety of productions.
- The Joseph Rowntree Theatre is another popular theatre, where numerous of productions can be enjoyed.
- The York Mystery Plays were originally performed from wagons at various locations around the city from the 14th century until 1570. In 1951, they were revived and nowadays they are performed every 3 to 4 years.
- The Museum Gardens are some of the most beautiful ones in the U.K. Scattered throughout the gardens are numerous ruins and picturesque buildings.
There are many hotels, pubs and restaurants in York, but accommodation can be hard to find sometimes, as the city is always very full with tourists and pilgrims. York is at the confluence of the Ouse and Foss rivers, 285 km north of London.
