Zaria

Zaria

Zaria has a rich history. It was an important Hausa town and later the British used the town as one of their main trading posts. It is one of the few places in Nigeria where you don't see excessively wide roads.

The old part of the city is called Birnin Zazzau, or Zaria City. Many buildings there are made of clay in the Hausa style. Zaria's old town was originally walled and there used to be a fortress. The Emir's Palace is an interesting place and if you like weaponry, you should visit the nearby Army Museum. There is a scenic mosque in Zaria.

Zaria is known for its silk-cotton trees, one of the largest trees in Zazzau emirate.

Anguwan Kahu was the place where cotton was used to make local mattresses, pillows, horse shirts etc.

There are several hotels and restaurants in town. Zaria is 705 km northeast of Lagos and 225 km northeast of Abuja. It has taxi connections with Kaduna, 65 km to the southwest and Kano, 135 km to the north.
