Zhenyuan (镇远县)


The ancient city of Zhenyuan sits in a mountainous region on the Wuyang River. There are numerous places of interest, especially in the old town.

The Qinglongdong Ancient Architectural Complex is located on the cliff of Mount Zhonghe. It includes the Zhongyuan Chan Temple; Z&icaron;yáng Shūyuàn (紫阳书院), or the Ziyang Academy of Classical Learning; Qinglongdong, Wànshòu Gōng (万寿宫), also known as Wanshou Palace, or 'Longevity Palace'; Xiānglú Yán (香炉岩), 'Incenses Burner Rock' and the scenic stone arch Zhusheng Bridge (祝圣桥) that spans the Wuyang River. In the middle of the bridge is a Chinese pavilion called 'Zhuangyuan Pavilion' (状元楼) or 'Kuixing Pavilion' (魁星阁).

Other interesting sites include the Site of Heping Village and the Zhenyuan Ancient Wall. There are also numerous Buddhist temples in Zhenyuan, including the Zhongyuan Chan Temple. Major Taoist Temples include the Mazu Temple andthe forementioned Wanshou Palace.

Mount Shiping provides excellent views over the area.

Every year, the level of the Wuyang River that passes through the city rises significantly and the river becomes very wide, providing a wide track for the annual Dragon Boat race.
