Almost everything in Aberdeeen is built of granite, making the entire city quite gray. No only the buildings, also the roads are made of granite. After rains, when the sun breaks through Aberdeen looks like a shiny silver star in the Scottish landscape, but when the sun doesn't shine it can look somewhat sad and depressive.
In Aberdeen are numerous companies and facilities that service the world's largest offshore oilfields. There is a bustling fish market not far from the harbor and the interesting maritime museum is in the vicinity.
The main thoroughfare is Union Street and along it lie several important monuments. The old Castlegate, as well as medieval Provost Skene's House are both worth a visit and if you are interested in art, you should visit the Aberdeen Art Gallery. The gallery houses an interesting Pre-Raphaelite and modern art collection.
There are numerous hotels and restaurants in Aberdeen, but sometimes accommodation is hard to find, as it is all occupied by expatriates that work in the oil industry. Aberdeen is 640 km north of London, on the mouth of the River Dee.
