Alaverdi
Alaverdi is a copper mining town in the Debed Valley in northeastern Armenia. There are three old Christian religious sites in the vicinity of Alaverdi.
- The Sanain Monastery was built from the 10th to the 13th century. It includes the Amenaprkich (Saviour) Church. The monastery is several kilometers southwest of Alaverdi.
- The Odzun Church and its medieval cemeteries are just west of Sanain, a small town 17 km (11 miles) from Alaverdi. The church was built in the 6th century.
- The Akhpat Monastery, 11 km (7 miles) east of Alaverdi, was the place where the popular 18th-century Armenian bard Sayat-Nova was in exile. The monastery sits on a scenic mountain ridge. It was built during the 10th to 13th centuries.
There are several hotels and restaurants in Alaverdi and it is also possible to stay at the monasteries. The best way to go to Alaverdi is via Tbilisi in Georgia, as it is closer by than Yerevan and train connections are better.
