All-American Canal

The All-American Canal is 129 km (80 miles) long. It is part of the federal irrigation system of the Hoover Dam. The canal was built between 1934 and 1940 across the Colorado Desert and is entirely within the United States. It replaced the Inter-California Canal, which passes through Mexico.

The Imperial Dam, northeast of Yuma, Arizona, diverts water from the Colorado River into the All-American Canal, which runs west to Calexico, California. Smaller canals move water into the Imperial Valley. The Coachella Canal branches northwest to the Coachella Valley. The All-American Canal system irrigates more than 254,961 km ² (630,000 acres) and has greatly increased crop yield in the area. Problems of drainage and salinity exist however.
