Arlit

Arlit is a uranium mining town in the Aïr Mountains, 825 km northeast of Niamey. It is the first place you'll get to when arriving from Algeria. It was founded in the 1970's by the mining companies to house their workforce and it has since grown steadily. There is a busy market in town where everything imaginable is sold. If you arrive in Arlit from Algeria you'll find the people much more friendly and relaxed.

Accommodation is available in the form of hotels and hostels. There are also several restaurants and a few campsites in Arlit. Food can also be obtained from the street stalls that are set up all over town in the evenings. Arlit can be reached by bus or bush taxi from Niamey.
