Atâr
Atâr is a small desert town, 410 km northeast of Nouakchott. Nomads from all of northern Mauritania gather in Atâr to feast and trade. The two parts of the town are connected by a large market. In the smaller part of the town, called Ksar, there are many interesting narrow winding streets. Trips to the desert and other towns in the area can be arranged in Atâr. Some of the more interesting places to visit include the oasis towns of Azougi (once an Almoradive stronghold) and Chinguetti (Islam's seventh holiest city).
There are some places to stay and eat. The town is connected by road with the capital.
