Austral Islands
The Austral Islands are famous for their elaborate woodcarvings and huge stone tikis, although nowadays there are almost no traditional artisans left, as the missionaries destroyed the ancient techniques.
Vegetation on the Austral Islands is not as abundant as in the rest of French Polynesia. There are numerous limestone caverns, as well as ruined temples, known as maraes. On the southernmost island of Rapa you can find several pas (hilltop fortresses).
Accommodation is scarce in the Austral Archipelago. The islands are 500 to 1300 km south of Papeete.
