Avebury is a pretty village and a good place to stay if you want to visit the Neolithic sites that are scattered throughout the area. Interesting sites include Silbury Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow, but the most spectacular one is a Avebury itself.
The stones at Avebury are probably more impressive than those at Stonehenge. They consist of an enormous circle of stones that were places there around 2600 BC and include the Barber Surgeon Stone. This stone was named so, because the skeleton of a medieval traveling barber was found buried beneath it (the stone probably tumbled and fell on him).
Avebury is 125 km west of London and some 25 km north of Stonehenge. Accommodation is available in town.
