Bilbao has only been discovered by tourists after the opening of the Guggenheim museum, housed in a futuristically shaped building on the borders of the Ría de Bilbao. Before the museum came to the city, Bilbao's main attraction was undoubted its Puente de Vizcaya; a bridge-like construction supporting a cable car that ferries cars, buses and pedestrians over the Ría between Las Arenas and Portugalete.
The city has an interesting Old Town (Casco Viejo) where marks on the walls of several buildings show how high the water rose during floods. One of the highlights in the historic quarter is the Gothic cathedral.
Not far from the city center, north of the Ría de Bilbao, a funicular takes you up to Artxanda, where the views over the city are amazing. Bilbao has an industrial past, so don't expect it to be the most beautiful place in the world.
There are many hotels, campsites, restaurants, bars and nightclubs in and around Bilbao. The city has air, rail and road connections with most other Spanish cities. Bilbao is 325 km north of Madrid.
