Black River Gorges National Park

Black River Gorges National Park lies in a beautiful highland area some 6 km (4 miles) southwest of Curepipe. The park includes the large reservoir of Mare aux Vacoas. South if this lake, which is surrounded by casuarinas and coniferous trees, lies Grand Bassin, a sacred lake to Hindus. Not far eastwards is Mauritius' largest unspoilt area, Plaine Champagne. It is also the rainiest place on the island, so be prepared for that. The Rivière Noire overlook (Black River viewpoint) is at the eastern end of the plain. It provides marvelous views over the area, which includes some waterfalls and the highest point of Mauritius, the Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire. The Piton rises 828 m (2712 feet) above sea level.

The best time to visit the area is between September and January, during the flowering season. You will see thousands of different colors of flowers, as well as numerous bird species, monkeys and wild pigs or deer.

Black River Gorges National Park is 25 km (17 miles) south of Port Louis. You can get there by bus via Curepipe, or by own means of transportation. The nearest accommodation is in Curepipe.
