Brasov is a medieval Saxon town that lies in a beautiful area of Transylvanian hills and is one of Romania's most visited places. Brasov is also the place where the very first public opposition to the Ceaucescu regime took place in 1987, when thousands of workers, angered by wage cuts, long working hours and food shortages, took to the streets to demand access to basic foodstuffs. Ceaucescu answered by sending in the troops and cut rations even further.
The city's main sight is its Black Church, which is supposed to be the largest Gothic church between Vienna and Istanbul. The church got its name from its blackened appearance, which was caused by a fire in 1689. Brasov is also an excellent place to stay if you want to visit Bran Castle, better known as 'Dracula's Castle', some 30 km (19 miles) to the south. En route from Brasov to Bran Castle you will pass Rasnov Castle, which is far less touristy. Brasov is also an excellent place to base yourself if you want to go skiing in the resorts of Poiana Brasov and Sinaia, which are easily reached by train or bus.
There are plenty of hotels and restaurants in Brasov. The city has good rail and road connections with most other cities in Romania, as well as several international destinations. Brasov is 145 km north of Bucuresti (Bucharest).
