Budva in Montenegro is Yugoslavia's prime Mediterranean coastal resort. There are several nice beaches, backed by high coastal mountains. The town's main beach is not very good. It consists of pebbles and it is quite crowded during the summer months. Some 500 m to the north is Mogren Beach, which is much better.
Budva's old town is a rebuilt version of the original, which was destroyed in an earthquake in 1979. It includes a museum, three churches and a fortress, all of which are exact copies of the originals. The fortress' ramparts provide nice views over the area.
Just southeast of Budva, is the island of Sveti Stefan. It was originally a small fishing village, but all of its inhabitants were bought out and the entire island has been turned into a hotel, which looks like a fishing village. You will have to pay to set foot on the island, even if you are not planning to stay there.
There are numerous other hotels in Budva, as well as many restaurants. The town is 310 km southwest of Beograd (Belgrade).
