Caicos Conch Farm & Inland Sea Center is a smelly place on the northeastern tip of Providenciales Island. It claims to be the only conch farm in the world and strives to protect the Caribbean queen conch, known as Strombus gigas, from extinction. Many of the mollusks are commercially raised for local use, as well as for export.
The farm was established by Chuck Hesse, an environmentalist. After years of research he is now able to produce a consumable mollusk in just 28 months, from egg to adult conch. Some 1 million conchs are kept offshore in 80 acres of fenced 'pasture' to keep predators away and around 2 million conchs in the ponds on the farm itself. Tours are organized on the farm and you will be shown how conchs are grown from egg to adults.
The Caicos Conch Farm & Inland Sea Center is 110 km northwest of Cockburn Town.
