Cairns

Cairns is one of Australia's major tourist destinations. It is the most important beach resort in the northern part of Queensland. Cairns is a good place to base yourself if you want to explore the Great Barrier Reef, Green Island, or Fitzroy Island. Trips to the wonderful Atherton Tableland and the market town of Kuranda are also available in Cairns, as well as arrangements to visit the Cape York Peninsula.

North of town, all the way up to Port Douglas, is a 50 km long stretch of beaches. Also in the vicinity of Cairns is Cape Tribulation, which has beautiful coastal scenery and boasts spectacular rainforest. Trips up the Daintree River are available there.

There are many hotels and restaurants in Cairns, as well as numerous bars, discos and nightclubs. Cairns is 1400 km northwest of Brisbane and 2080 km north of Canberra.
