Câmara de Lobos is a picturesque fishing port in the south of Madeira. Its name means 'Wolf's Gorge', referring to the monk seals, which were known as lobo do mar, or wolf of the sea, to the Portuguese. When Madeira was first settled, the seals were relatively common in the bay, but now they are one of the world's rarest sea mammals. They only breed on the nearby Desertas Islands.
The small harbor of Câmara de Lobos is always full of colorful fishing boats. Winston Churchill loved the place and often visited to paint there. A plaque marks the place where he would set up his easel. Câmara's fishermen usually fish at night for espada.
Not far from the harbor, where boats are still built in the traditional way on wooden frames, is a small fishermen's chapel. The chapel was originally constructed in the 1420's, making it one of the oldest buildings on Madeira, although it has been remodeled several times. Inside you can see paintings, depicting the life of São Pedro Telmo, the patron saint of Portuguese fishermen. The chapel also boasts a baroque altar and a beautifully painted ceiling. In the main square of Câmara is the village church, which dates from the 16th century. The building is dedicated to São Sebastian, whose martyrdom is depicted inside. During the baroque period, the church was restored and boasts some lovely gilded wood. There are also some azulejos, the typical Portuguese mosaics you see on so many buildings throughout the country.
Northeast from Câmara is a hilltop named Pico da Torre. Although it is only 200 m (660 feet) high, it offers excellent views over the town. The views from nearby Cabo Girão are absolutely stunning.
Not far from Câmara de Lobos is the small village of Estreito da Câmara de Lobos. It boasts a 19th century church. The village is often called the 'wine capital of Madeira', for the huge amount of vineyards surrounding it. Every year in September, one of the island's liveliest wine festivals is held there.
There are several hotels and restaurants in Câmara de Lobos. The town is 5 km west from Funchal.
