Cape Cross (seal reserve)
Cape Cross lies 115 km north of Swakopmund. In 1486 Portuguese explorer Diego Cão was the first European to set foot in Namibia. He planted a 2 m (6.5 feet) high cross in honor of king Johannes I from Portugal. In 1893 a German sailor took the cross home and a year later a replica was erected on the site.
Nowadays Cape Cross is an important fur-seal reserve. The colony has about 80,000 to 100,000 animals and you can get very near to them, although it is better not to disturb them. Especially in November and December when the young are born it is very important not to walk between the animals. If you have a weak stomach, keep a distance, as the smell can be terrific.
