Central China is the cradle of Chinese civilization and there are numerous ancient temples, monasteries and sacred mountains scattered throughout the area. Nowadays Central China is the country's industrial powerhouse. Many of the region's larger cities are very industrial and polluted. China's first communist leader, Mao Zedong was born in the town of Shaoshan.

Transportation
Most of the provincial capitals in Central China have air connections with Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, as well as one another. Xi'an in Shaanxi has the best connections, including flights to international destinations.
Trains and buses crisscross the entire region, but trains are usually more comfortable.
Cities along the Yangzi River are connected to one another by ferries. The entire navigable stretch of the Yangzi River is between Chongqing and Shanghai and it takes six days to travel the entire distance by boat.
