In 1731, the French started construction of Fort Saint Frédéric in the northeast of New York. During the French and Indian Wars, the name given by American historians to the North American colonial wars between Great Britain and France in the late 17th and the 18th centuries, the fort successfully resisted early English attacks in 1755 and 1756. It was demolished before the advance of British officer Jeffery Amherst in 1759. The British began building a new fort, known as Fort Amherst in 1759. That fort was later renamed Crown Point.
On 12 May 1775, in the beginning of the American Revolution, Crown Point was captured by Seth Warner and a detachment of Green Mountain Boys. On 22 June 1777 they abandoned the fort to General John Burgoyne in the Saratoga campaign, a plan to end the American Revolution by splitting the colonies along the Hudson River.
Nowadays, Crown Point is a summer resort and a historic site on Lake Champlain. Crown Point Reservation, with bathing and fishing facilities, a museum and ruins of colonial forts, is nearby. Accommodation and restaurants are available in town. Crown Point is 150 km north from Albany and 640 km north from Washington D.C.
