Dalat is the main center of Vietnam's Southern Highlands region. The city used to be very green with numerous parks, but economic development is changing this fast. Because of its altitude Dalat has a cool, refreshing climate and it is a good place to stay if you want to visit the surrounding highlands.
There are several interesting sights in Dalat. Emperor Bao Dai's Summer Palace boasts an interesting art collection. The city's French Quarter is very interesting and it is nice to stroll around there. The Hang Nga Guesthouse & Art Gallery is often referred to as the Crazy House. It is a very special place and not to be missed.
5 km (3 miles) north of Dalat is the Valley of Love, where paddle boats and horses are rented for romantic trips in the area. It is also possible to explore the highlands around the city on horseback or on foot. Some interesting villages in the region include Lat Village and the Chicken Village, which features a huge statue of a chicken.
There is a wide variety of accommodation in Dalat, but often it is fully booked, as the city is very popular with domestic tourists and honeymooners. The city is known throughout Vietnam for its coffee shops. Dalat has air connections with Ho Chi Minh City, but the airport is quite far from town; about 30 km (19 miles). Express buses ply the route as well. Dalat is 235 km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City and 1045 km south of Hanoi.
