AcActually there are three towns in India called Dalutabad. The one described here is some 10 km northwest of Aurangabad. In the 14th century, Mohammed Tughlaq, then Sultan of Delhi decided the capital should be moved to Dalutabad, some 1000 km south of Delhi. He ordered Delhi's entire population to head for Dalutabad, but many died along the way. In Dalutabad a hilltop fortress was built, only to be abandoned 17 years later, when the Sultan ordered everybody back to Delhi.
Nowadays the fortress is one of India's major monuments and can be visited. To enter the fortress you will have to climb through a pitch black, spiraling tunnel. Defenders could simply hurl burning coal and oil down through the tunnel to stop invaders. Despite of this, the fort was once taken by bribing the guard.
Most people prefer to stay in Aurangabad and visit the fort on a day trip.
