The region around Daytona Beach was first settled by Spanish Franciscans in the 17th century. Daytona Beach has long been a popular year-round resort. Its economy has diversified to include aerospace industries. The city boasts a hard, white beach. It has been the scene of automobile racing since 1902. The annual Daytona 500 race is an important event.

Daytona USA is an interactive motor-sports museum. It was opened in 1996. Institutions of higher education include Bethune-Cookman College and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Daytona Beach is the center of a rapidly urbanizing area.

There are numerous hotels, bars and restaurants in Daytona Beach. The city is on the Atlantic coast and the lagoon of the Halifax River in the northeast of Florida, 350 km southeast of Tallahassee and 1180 km south from Washington D.C.
