Between Den Helder in the northwest of The Netherlands and Esbjerg in Denmark lies an area of immense natural importance. The Wadden Sea is a world that is heavily affected by the tides. During the six hours of low tide large areas of the Wadden Sea fall dry and it is possible to walk from the mainland to some of the Wadden Islands.
The seven Dutch Wadden Islands are Texel, Vlieland, Ameland, Terschelling, Schiermonnikoog, Rottummeroog and Rottummerplaat. The last two are uninhabited, while on Schiermonnikoog no motorized vehicles are allowed. The inhabited islands have excellent ferry connections with the mainland and it is also possible to hop from island to island. They also offer a wide variety of accommodation and restaurants. On all of the islands you will find quiet and open spaces, as well as beaches and dunes that support a wide variety of flora and fauna. The Wadden Islands are between 70 and 170 km north and northeast from Amsterdam.
