Eisriesenwelt Caves

The Eisriesenwelt Caves are the largest accessible ice caves in the world. They consist of a series of caves and passageways under 30,000 cubic m of ice. Some 40 km of the caves has been explored. The caves were first 'discovered' in 1879 and Alexander von Mork was the one who explored most of the caverns. When he died, the urn with his ashes was placed in the so-called 'cathedral' cave.

In the caverns you'll see beautiful ice formations and frozen waterfalls. 75-minute tours are available, but make sure to wear warm clothes, as the icy world of the Eisriesenwelt Caves is very cold.

The caves are open from May to October. The town nearest to the caves is Werfen. The Eisriesenwelt Caves are 250 km west of Wien (Vienna).
