El Hierro

El Hierro is a rural island that has escaped tourist development and is mainly used for agriculture. It is the most un-spoilt and smallest of the Canary Islands and seldom visited by tourists. El Hierro's coast is steep and rocky, but the island has a good, 14 km-long beach at Golfoas well.

The island's capital is the village of Valverde. Other interesting towns on El Hierro include Echedo, which is in a wine producing area and Isora, where cheeses are manufactured.

The central tableland offers fine views over the island. It features several volcanic craters and nice woods. El Hierro's highest peak, 15101 m high Malpaso is also situated there. Tiñor features pyramids of volcanic ashes on green meadows. In the center of the island several towns have been deserted and the only thing you'll see are some herdsmen looking after their cattle.

In Tamaduste you will find a large lake of crystalline water, while Restinga is a popular diving and fishing spot. Frontera has important vineyards.

Accommodation is available on El Hierro. The island has air and boat connections with Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
