Flinders Ranges

Flinders Ranges lie in the eastern part of South Australia. They stretch for about 800 km (500 miles) north from the northern end of Spencer Gulf. According to many people, Flinders Ranges are the ultimate place to experience outback Australia. Flinders Ranges are perfect for bush walking. There is a wide variety of wildlife in the region. In the far north of Flinders Ranges are numerous barren salt lakes.

Flinders Ranges' best-known feature is probably the enormous natural basin of Wilpena Pound. 1000 m (3280 feet) high cliffs ring it.

In nearby Mount Remarkable National Park is the so-called Alligator Gorge. Other interesting sights include the Brachina Gorge and the ironstone capped ridge known as the Great Wall of China. The best time to visit Flinders Ranges is during the winter, although in spring the ranges are greenest and carpeted in wildflowers.

Accommodation is available in the towns of Quorn and Hawker.
