Fraser measures 120 km by 15 km, making it the world's largest sand island. Apart from several rocky outcrops, the island is composed entirely of sand, although most of it is covered with vegetation. There are no paved roads on Fraser Island and it is only sparsely populated. In 1993 it was added to the World Heritage List.
The island can be explored on foot, by 4WD vehicle, or on trail bikes. The island boasts some 200 lakes that provide excellent spots for fishing. Fraser's beaches are amongst Australia's best and there are many huge dunes and thick forests.
You can get to Fraser Island by ferry from River Heads, Inskip Point and Urangan Boat Harbour on the mainland of Queensland. There are plenty of ferries and the trip takes about 30 minutes. Accommodation is available on the island. Fraser is 160 km north of Brisbane and 1150 km northeast of Canberra, several kilometers off Queensland's eastern coast.
