The Gallipoli Peninsula has known violent times, as it was invaded and attacked numerous times over its history. The strategically located area has held the key to Istanbul for centuries and it was there that Atatürk fiercely combated the Allies for 9 months during WWII. The Gallipoli battlefields are spread over a wide area, it is more than 35 km (22 miles) from the northernmost battlefield to the southernmost, and without your own transportation it is going to be a whole expedition to visit them all. The peninsula is nowadays mostly used for farming, while some areas are covered with pine forests.
The best places to stay are the cities of Çanakkale and Gelibolu, on the eastern and western shore respectively.
In March the battles are commemorated and accommodation can be difficult to find during that period. The rest of the year you shouldn't have any problems finding a room. Restaurants can be found in almost every town on the peninsula. Ferries across the Dardanelles run between Çanakkale and Eceabat, as well as from Lâpseki.
