Ghent (Gent - Gand)

Ghent (Gent - Gand)

Gent was the second largest European city in medieval times (only Paris was bigger). It sits on a strategic location, where the Leie and Schelde (Scheldt) Rivers congregate. The city has seen a lot of violence ever since medieval times and the most famous event was probably the armed battle of its inhabitants against high taxes and restricted civil liberties.

Brugge is a gray city, but it is very beautiful and well worth a visit. From the belfort you'll have excellent views over the city. The Sint-Baafskathedral (cathedral) was built by Jan van Eyck. About 10 minutes walking, northeast of Gent's central station is the Museum voor Schone Kunsten (Museum of Fine Arts). It has a collection of works by the Flemish Primitives, including Hieronymus Bosch.

There are numerous hotels and restaurants in Gent. The city has good rail and road connections with the rest of Belgium. Gent is 50 km northwest of Brussels.
